If you are interested in volunteering to help DFA, here are some basic categories for you to consider
Puppy Raising Some client families do raise their own service dog candidates from puppies. But some cannot. In order to provide service dogs to those families, DFA has to have volunteers who are willing to raise a puppy for approximately its first year. Raisers keep the puppies in their homes, working with DFA trainers on a regular basis to teach basic obedience and good manners around the home. Over time, the puppies begin going to many public places, and sometimes even to work with the volunteers.
One of the most important criteria for a foster is that the puppy not be left alone for the entire working day. Unless a raiser is an extremely experienced dog person, most folks will find the demands and problems from that arrangement nearly insurmountable.
We also strongly prefer foster homes with fenced yards. Puppies in training are very energetic and require a great deal of exercise and free time.
Fosters are asked to provide a program-approved food for the puppy, also any toys, bedding, or incidentals needed. DFA provides all training equipment, a crate, and all expenses for medical care.
If you are interested in applying to raise a puppy for DFA, you should start with the online application at this link: Application for Volunteer Puppy Raisers
Short-Term Fostering Some people who are interested in helping with dog foster care cannot commit to a year's time. If you would be interested in providing shorter term care (such as during a vacation or illness of one of our regular foster families), you would also need to fill out the general application for puppy raisers (Application for Volunteer Puppy Raisers). In the section requesting any additional comments or information, please indicate under what circumstances and for how long at a time you might be willing to keep a trainee in your home.
Event Staffing DFA holds several large fundraising events each year which require large numbers of people volunteering their time & legwork. If you are interested in helping with one of the fundraisers, please email events@dogsforautism.org or call the DFA office.
Practical Help with Projects DFA has an almost endless need for help with it's building and grounds. If you would like to participate in a workday, and/or donate some time to help with maintenance, yard work, landscaping, errands, construction, or repair, please email projects@dogsforautism.org
